Sports Fishing in Niigata City and Japan

Seabass fishing on the river mouth in summer

Global warming

Global warming has been making abnormal weathers all over the world. I know that this summer had been unusually hot in Europe and America. On the contrary, it was cold and agriculture suffered damage in Japan.

But cold summer made our fishing good. Though it is difficult to explain how the cold weather worked, seabass fishing on river mouths in everywhere in our prefecture was unusually good. There were a lot of groups of anchovie there. I think this is the key which solves the mystery.

The River Mouth

Niigata is a big city, the population of which is about a half million. But nature remains around the mouth of the Agano. You will see it in Pic.5, 6 and 9 below. Though I live in central Niigata, it takes only fifteen minutes to go there by car. I am happy.

Fishing methods

Fishing methods are easy. Get up early in the morning, go to the river mouth, choose lures of vibration type, cast one of them, count dwon properly, and retrieve it. That's all. Some anglers describe some difficult techniques. But I have never needed these. Perhaps they tend to complicate things.

The first morning I went there in this summer was July 30. I had rain but no wind. Soon I caught two seabasses easily; the size of those were 75cm 3.0Kg and 71cm 2.5Kg ( Pic.1, 2 ). It was a surprising thing, as I can seldom get such a nice seabass and additionally I fished two!

Next morning I caught three seabasses. The first and second one were in Pic.3 and 4. The body length of those were 72cm and 61cm. Though I was well satisfied, it was not over. See Pic.5. I am holding a ranker of 94cm in length and 5.9Kg in weight. It is the biggest one I fished in 2003.

I fished a big one on the morning of August 3. Its length was 88cm, its weight was 5.7Kg ( Pic.6 ). You will see the scenery of the mouth. There are a beautiful sandy beach and some anglers fishing.

Next morning I got a nice seabass of 69cm 3Kg ( Pic.7 ).

I went there twice a day on August 8. I got a seabass of 55cm in the morning, and a ranker of 88cm 5.4Kg in the afternoon ( Pic.8 and 9 ). It was unusual that I had fished such many and large seabasses in summer. Usually I get only sevseral ones in August.

Next morning, the typhoon was coming. It was rainy and windy. The activity of seabasses were so high and I eassily got four seabasses; the body length of those were 53cm, 54cm, 43cm and 67cm ( Pic.10, 11, 12 and 13 ). Though the last one of 2.7Kg in weight was usually a nice size, it was not so in this summer surpisingly.

I fished two seabasses on August 12, the length of those were 72cm and 58cm ( Pic.14, 15 ). See these pictures. The lures in those have a blade in the hip. It spins in water and attracts fish well. The lures of this type are effective and become popular in Japan.

Next morning I caught four seabasses, the length of those were 59cm, 59cm, 25cm and 74cm ( Pic.16, 17, 18, 19 ). All of those were the results of spin-tailed lures. Do you have it?

I got two seabasses on August 16; the length were 42cm and 53cm ( Pic.20, 21 ).

Afterwards we had so much rain that the Agano became muddy and torrent. And seabasses were gone to somewhere. This summer was unusually cold, but was hot to me, and was over at last.
